UW Arsonist Arraigned Today

Someone was finally charged with arson in the case of the UW Horticulture fire of 2001 and no it wasn't someone from Eugene although we know you want to jump to that conclusion you anti-Oregonian. She's from Berkeley which we hope was going to be your second guess.

Briana Waters, 30, of Berkeley, California is getting arraigned today on arson charges and there's a possibility that she could face 35 years in prison for the crime. Actually, we're surprised that number isn't higher. More back-pats to the P-I for not using the term "eco-terror" in the reporting of this story, but that word will be used over and over in the media and in the court room and it's not hard to imagine that there's a newish royal dictum on the books that sends terrorists (eco or otherwise) to Gitmo for indefinite dog sessions and "softening up" regardless of their actual crime.

The UW Center of Horticultural Whatevers burned up in a fire in May 2001 that was claimed by the Earth Liberation Front. Their cutesy "ELF" was sprayed around the premises of the not-so-cutesy arson and their target was Toby Bradshaw.

From the P-I:

The group claimed Bradshaw was "the driving force in G.E. (genetically engineered) tree research," and a person who "continues to unleash mutant genes into the environment that is certain to cause irreversible harm to forest ecosystems."

The UW has rebuilt the Horticultural Thingy since the arson and it is really really cool now. Merrill Hall has Silver LEED certification water reclamation systems, natural ventilation, solar panels, green roof, recycled building materials, all that stuff. Way way beyond the whole nine yards of green goodness.
