Our NoCal cousin, SFist recently posted briefly about a house party in Berkeley, CA that also broke out in violence this past weekend. The horribly ironic detail in this case? The person who was shot and killed was the father of three children, who was hosting the party at his family's own home, so he could ensure that his kids would be safe. His killer is still at large.
The San Francisco Chronicle has an all-too-familiarly harrowing account that reads too much like the article that the Stranger recently published about the Capitol Hill shootings, though thankfully with fewer deaths. Here's one eerie quote:
Some of the party guests -- most of whom ranged in age from 13 to 18 -- escaped by jumping out of second-floor windows or barricading themselves behind doors.
This is most disturbing because it cuts to the core of those who are crying wolf about dance ordinances and pointing the "do you know where your children are at night?" fingers in the Seattle shooting. These parents took their kids' safety at parties seriously and very personally, and even then, as the mother sadly concluded, "Bad children came along and ruined it, and they killed him." Awful, awful, awful.
