After M's centerfielder Jeremy Reed hurt his hand running into a wall last week, trainers x-rayed him and found a wrist fracture. He was to miss 6-8 weeks. Turns out that fracture is at least four years old, isn't serious, and all Reed really has is a sore hand. He should be ready for Opening Day.
Unbroken wrists don't usually stop Stanford grads from attaining their career goals; usually it's something like a downturn in the cost of medium-term debentures.
But in this case, Reed's good luck is very bad news for backup Joe Borchard, a former Cardinal QB.
If you aren't Albert Pujols or Ken Griffey, Jr., you need some luck to land a major league job, and with Reed out, the recently-acquired Borchard had his opportunity. He was calling this week, when the M's were to audition him for the opening day start in centerfield, as the most important of his career. As it turns out, the best Borchard can do now is a bench job (barring another injury). And, considering that he clearly can't hit a breaking ball, that's probably for the best.
