Not Straight Forward
Last Saturday, Seattlest attended what may be one of the final public screenings of Not Straight Forward, a documentary film by Jenny Ting, about Seattle’s lesbian dating scene. Saturday’s screening was the icebreaker to a broader evening of burlesque, feather boas and dancing, provided by Girl4Girl Productions. Seattlest didn’t stick around for these festivities, but the film sure was super. (Thanks for asking!)
Not Straight Forward follows the wholly unique and unreserved, Tan Vo on 10 dates with 10 very different women. These women run the full gamut as to our conceptions (and misconceptions) of what lesbian women are like, what they're into and what they talk about on first dates. From sugar-cookie femmes to robusty butch-types, Tan leaps from one date to the next, wowing each prospective girlfriend by her honesty, her spontaneity, and her shit-your-pants funny self.
Like we said, this may have been the final public showing, considering the amount of screen time the film has already received (including film festivals in New Zealand, Switzerland, Portugal, London…). Lucky for you and your friends, the DVD is available and ready to order. Seattlest promise: This film makes perfect viewing for house-parties and other such get-togethers, and at only $15, it’s a steal when you consider you’ll be laughing your ass off for an hour straight. (Except for the excerpts from an interview with Eastside bigot, Rev. Ken Hutcherson. Those parts aren’t funny. They’re sad, because he’s sad.)
