Androgyny vs. Hedonism

Two pillars of MasculinityTonight is a night of hard choices. Sure, it's more on the scale of where to see Snakes on a Plane then how to replace the viaduct, but it's a hard and important decision nonetheless. That decision? Do you attend the ghetto-fabulous debut of Bootylib at the Baltic Room or the 80s fabulous Prince vs. Michael at Rebar?

As Seattlest mentioned last week, the Baltic Room has a new Thursday monthly. Entitled Bootylib, emphasis will be on booty music. Ghettotech, booty house, Miami bass, and Baltimore club will all come together in one booty-shaking blend. Considering those genres are already descended from hip-hop, techno, house, and electro, the music for the night should vary wildly in every quality other than dancefloor friendliness. The night's promoters have also made it a point to try to pull a crowd from outside that of the Hill, hoping to not only mix different styles, but different demographics as well. Everyone has a booty and a desire to shake it (no matter how repressed), and Seattlest hopes that tonight's festivities are welcomed with all of the debauchery that it needs for success.

Predating all of Bootylib's styles, Prince vs. Michael is a musical battle more than two decades in the making. For the last four years, bombhiphop.com has been digging deep into their crates, playing not only the songs of The Purple One and the King of Pop, but of their associates as well, including the Jackson family on one side, and Sheila E, Vanity 6, and yes, The Time. These two didn't just feature prominently in the eighties, they OWNED the eighties. Times since then haven't been as kind (although Prince is on the upswing), but this celebration is about when both men could do no wrong (other than what they did to their hair). The winner is obviously going to be Michael (he did Thriller!), but it will be fun all the same to see the DJs pretend that Prince has a chance.

Where does Seattlest stand on the issue of what to attend tonight? We're going to take the Swiss approach of neutrality and be at both. We'll be the sexy m.f. backin' that thang up with a P.Y.T.. That's just how Seattlest rolls.

How can there be any question about Snakes on a Plane? The only real question about that movie is which theater to go see it on opening night!
