SHARE and share alike?

tent2.jpgMayday, Mayday! May 1 is the day the City of Seattle will pull funding for SHARE/WHEEL, the people who brought you Tent City I, II, III, and IV, unless SHARE agrees to share information about its campers. The City of Seattle, wants shelters to participate in Safeharbors, a homeless tracking database designed to better count the homeless, in order to better address their needs, according to its supporters.

Every other shelter has agreed to participate, but TC peeps are hard-core into the 5th Amendment, or Bill of Rights, or whatever it is that protects your privacy, which is pretty hard to come by when you don’t have four walls in which to live. Wait, does the Constitution protect privacy? We missed that class.

SHARE/WHEEL has long said they won’t participate in Safeharbors, no way, no how. Never mind the money they’ll lose for the 14 shelters they operate.

The City holds the purse strings, but Tent City has the trump card. If they have to close their shelters due to lack of funding, they’re planning to set up camp in Seattle’s city parks — presumably, the ones that still have trees.
