The Rachel Corrie Story: Not ready for prime time

mini-claire.jpgSeattlest went to school in Olympia (for awhile, anyway, with apologies to
Courtney Love) and we more or less recall the political foment of The Evergreen State College, the lo-pro, no-letter-grades hothouse that produced Rachel Corrie, the student-activist who was killed when she was struck by bulldozer in Gaza three years ago today.

Mistake or murder? Martyred activist or hippie fool? Was she killed by Israel, or sacrificed for the cause by the International Solidarity Movement?

Corrie’s gripping story could be the stuff of a blockbuster book or movie, argues Robert L. Jamieson, Jr. in today’s P-I, except that powerful pro-Israel forces wouldn’t hear of it. Exhibit A: New York Theater Workshop nixed its own production of a play about Corrie, although there is a reading of it in Portland tonight.

There’s also a vigil and procession starting at 6 p.m. in Volunteer Park. But whatevs. Seatlest believes Corrie’s tale is better told in a book, which no one would actually read, but which would be turned into movie (hello Kushner!) prompting everyone to search Amazon for a used paperback with the original cover. Exchange those sandals with Jimmy Choos and she’s Bridget Jones on the West Bank!

Get Steven on the phone. Set up a reading with Sarah Polley or Claire Danes. Politics shall divide us no more. Plus, Rachel Corrie was totally gorge -- young, thin and blonde. Should be a total DREAM to cast!

Un like the right-wing chickenhawk keyboard clad faux new fans Corrie actually got involved with a cause promoting peace and stood up for what she believed in and was killed because of it.

Oh, Amy. Claire Danes? My parents like her. I'm thinking Veronica Mars, but even then we gotta get greenlighted YESTERDAY. Time and frickin' tide wait for no After-School Speceial.

"Weep for Jamie," by those monarchs of earnest-ness, Peter, Paul and Mary, must appear on the soundtrack.
