An email from a reader posed a relatively simple question: Where can I get a good waffle? Turns out said reader was from Houston, where they'd managed to find themselves a waffle sent straight from some whole-grain, nutty heaven, and they hadn't yet found themselves a suitable alternative here in the Northwest.
So the call went out across Seattlest HQ, but rather than the expected torrent of praise for various Jet City waffles, the response was a tepid trickle of "meh," with a lot of unenthusiastic mentions of "OK" waffles. Here's what we've managed to come up with, but now we are extending the question to you, our dear readers. We know somebody out there is fulfilling the city's waffle needs, and if no one is, take this as our vote of support for whoever decides do so.
Seattle's Waffles
Arosa: The Waffle Cafe - We can't vouch for the quality first-hand, but after confirming that they still exist despite the lack of much mention anywhere, "snack waffles" sounds like a concept we can stand behind.
Chow Foods - These restaurants were brought up collectively for their not *amazing* but pretty good waffles. Of special note here is that the gingerbread waffles from former associate Jitterbug have made their way to Coastal Kitchen, while Jitterbug now has something that "isn't as good."
Glo's - Like everything else, the waffles are more than good enough, but aren't going to win any awards. They switch things up with the specials and everything, but waiting an hour for "OK" just doesn't make all that much sense.
Julia's on Broadway - Seattlest had their own waffle craving last year, and Julia's got the job done, although the spring poking out from the couch didn't really help the experience, and left us feeling a bit violated.
Original Pancake House - While only serving "some pretty good waffles" they've got "good dutch babies too," and get a lot of praise, if you're willing to make the trek.
Vera's - This Mom and Pop operation (read: slightly better than a dive) serves a good breakfast up in Ballard, with waffles described as "wonderful."
Honorable Mention
Portage Bay Cafe - Two words: waffle bar. Well, they call it a "breakfast bar," but it gives you the freedom to go nuts with various fruits to adorn your french toast or pancakes. They used to have waffles, but took them away so call 'em up and get them to put them back on the menu.
