All right, so Seattlest hasn’t yet seen Così fan Tutte, which is playing right now at Seattle Opera. In fact, tonight, Friday night and Saturday night are your last chances to see it, with Friday and Saturday being your best bet for seats.
Since we haven’t seen it, we can’t review it, but we can tell you a few things. The production updates Mozart’s 18th century opera to the 21st century, which, if you’re a stickler for authenticity, you may not like. But it got a rave review from the Seattle Times:
“…a production that may well be the funniest and the most dramatically successful show Seattle Opera has ever staged.”
Well, Seattlest has to say that would be something to see. However, we’ve never much cared for Così; it just seems like Mozart didn’t try as hard as he did with Don Giovanni, say, or The Magic Flute. To our ears, the music is boring (i.e., there’s not an aria in there we’re dying to learn).
In other classical happenings about town, we have Seattle Symphony showcasing Haydn’s “London” Symphony at 7:30 on Thursday night and 8:00 on Saturday night. The “London” Symphony is his last, composed in 1795 in – of all places – London.
The Ladies Musical Club is also giving concerts, left, right and center. They’re sponsoring concerts every few days, with a big one on March 17th at the Women’s University Club. Doesn’t it all sound modern and yet slightly 19th century? (You’d be right about that; the club was started in 1891.)
So get out and enjoy. There's nothing better for rainy-day blues (all the more blue for the beautiful weather they followed) than an afternoon or evening in a concert hall.
