Our Sportsball Roundup

lassoboy.gifRainier Beach, Seattlest's favorite high school hoops team, got upset in the state quarterfinals last night, by Lynden High. But, really, what chance did they stand against a team that has players with names like Dirk Dallas and Brady Bomber. Dallas had 19 points, Bomber had 15. Is this a high school basketball team or a 30's detective novel?

The Seahawks released two defensive starters and a no-name, possibly to free up the money they'll need to re-sign Shaun Alexander.

The Mariners played their first spring training game yesterday, with Felix Hernandez throwing curveballs that Dave Niehaus described as "not fair."

In other baseball news, the World Baseball Classic started yesterday. Ichiro's on the Japanese team, he went 1-6, but the Japanese won 18-2. Incidentally, in ESPN's WBC preview, Tim Kurkjian opined that "anytime you've got Ichiro leading off, you're going to have a pretty good offense." Evidently he didn't see the 2004 or 2005 Mariners.

Other Mariners participating are Adrian Beltre, Joel Piniero, and Ken Griffey, Jr.

USS Mariner, predictably, hates the World Baseball Classic, but the site's more optimistic commenters seem to disagree. We think Deadspin has exactly the right attitude about this event.

The Husky men beat Arizona State last night. They'd be in first-place in the Pac-10 right now had California managed to beat UCLA, but the Golden Bears lost in overtime. Bummer. The Dawgs must beat Arizona Saturday at 3 and hope Stanford can beat UCLA. If so, they'll have their first Pac-10 title since the Weimar Republic.

The Husky women are the #4 seed in the Pac-10 tourney. If they haven't already, they can sew up an NCAA bid by beating #5 seed USC in the first round on Saturday. They play at 7:15.
