Ok we all know that the Ricky Gervais podcast is the greatest thing to ever appear on the internet and everyone has a favorite random cast that they subscribe to, but what are the best Seattle-focused podcasts? We’ll give you a list of our favorites, but we’re willing to be turned on to any others.
Most of the links provided here are xml and are intended to be opened with a program that correctly interprets that file type (newsreaders like Bloglines or NewsGator). Your browser may open them and you may find an .mp3 or .mov file to click on. We've tried to include mp3 links when possible and those are marked as such.
**On Hold - Seattle’s new On Hold program isn’t just for people trying to call City Hall as the newspapers spun it. It’s actually a municipal podcast showcasing local music of a variety of genres, which we think is really damn cool. Even though there’s only one episode out we have high hopes for it and are including it here. Sometimes it makes you feel like you're on hold, though. (xml / mp3)
**Stressed Out Radio - The focus here is 206 hip-hop, but the host Blymm is the reason to listen. He’s a rising star - This cast is incredible and if you're going to click on any of these have it be this one. You'll be glad you did, we promise. (xml / mp3)
**Podcasting Liberally - This is the audio track to Seattle’s Drinking Liberally event and we have to admit we’re a little behind on these. Episode #1 featured a ten minute conversation about how gay Eyeman is so we’re anxious to hear the rest. The problem with this one is that as far as we know there’s no way to subscribe so you have to watch Horsesass.org for word of new episodes. (mp3 / mp3 / mp3 / latest with Ron Sims)
**Music That matters - KEXP is not strictly a podcast outfit, obviously, but they do offer a variety of casts that are very worth listening to. It’s also a decent solution to the problem of there being no FM tuner in most mp3 players. Our favorite KEXP cast is Music That Matters, but there’s also Song of the Day, Sonarchy and Live Performances. All of these are also available via iTunes and the KEXP site.
**The Works - Another cheat as John Moe’s bread and butter is on KUOW, but his podcast friendly topics (The High Tech Living Room, The Year of Open Source, HD Radio) and local blogger guests make him a must subscribe. This is an awesome program whether on the radio, streamed or podcasted. (xml / mp3)
**Seattle and Beyond - For a town that celebrates indie culture to the extent that Seattle does, we’re sorely lacking in indie music podcasts. Maybe if they’re out there we just don’t know about em. Seattle and Beyond stands alone in this category, although it does have a tendency to stray way into adult contemporary territory. There's a lot of local music here you won't hear anywhere else.

Around The -Ists This Week

The Ricky Gervais podcast WAS the greatest thing to hit the internet, but now that he's charging 2 bucks an episode, I'd have to disagree.
eh, he's tryin' to make a buck. I don't have a problem with that. You know it costs some money to even host a really popular podcast - Would you rather he worked some H2 jokes into the podcast and got paid by them?
Be on the lookout Seattle!!
please, 2 bucks?! he's made like 2 million already. to charge for this bizarre drivel like that is petty.
Great list, Dan. You've got a couple in there I hadn't heard of yet; I'm going to have to add them to our list . I've actually had On Hold on the iPod today. I really like it, except for the fact that I feel the urge to press # every few minutes while I'm listening.
Thanks for the plug!
We looked at our first few Podcasting Liberally recordings as a chance to get comfortable with the format, but we'll syndicate it and get it into iTunes shortly.
Dan, Thanks for the mention, I think you are the first to do a write up for my show. Independent + Pacific Northwest = SnB Show... Ken
