While there are other characters in Swimming in the Shallows---a lesbian couple ready to get gay-married and a straight couple whose marriage is falling apart over the literal number of things they own---as far as we're concerned, this is the "gay sharkboy" play. Or at least, the love story between a man and a shark is the plot point everyone seems to cite when it comes to this production, currently showing at the Washington Ensemble Theatre. Quirky and engaging, quite simply, this is the funniest play we've seen in a long time.
Katjana Vadeboncouer's direction of Adam Bock's off-Broadway hit is simple, stylish, and lively, thanks in large part to the smart staging and witty chapter titles projected above each scene. The acting's great all the way around, but special mention must be made of Marc Kenison as Nick, the gentle fag who falls in love (and lust) way too easily, and Michael Place, as the aquarium-dwelling mako shark who catches his eye. And with good reason: This shark is HOT. Place, with his slick faux-hawk, designer denim, and tailored blazer (complete with dorsal fin), made us completely reevaluate our stance on bestiality. Perhaps the human being and the fish can coexist peacefully. In our pants.
Anyways, this is a rather cute play about issues of the heart featuring some flat-out hilarious moments. As always, we liked the part(s) with the kissing. It's a good 'un, and your last chance to catch it is this weekend. Don't miss out.
