Beatdown Announced

mini-glgvintev1.jpgDid you ever read the book The Chocolate War when you were a kid? Maybe you were an adult when you read it, but for Seattlest it was a long while back. There's a scene in there near the end of the book that portrays a boxing match between two students. The way the boxing match works is that both boxers take suggestions from the crowd for what kind of punch to throw. It's like reality boxing, but way before reality TV. So the first suggestion is unfolded and it says something like "boxer A, who everyone likes, hits boxer B, who everyone hates, with an uppercut." It goes on that way for a little while, the boxers trading blows, until one of the suggestions reads, "boxer A, who everyone likes, hits boxer B in the balls." It all goes nutso from there and poor boxer B gets real messed up by a series of illegal blows. We remember that scene vividly and again we read this book a long long time ago. Well, either we read it or it actually happened to us.

With that in mind, the Stranger is hosting a debate. At Town Hall on March, 2, they're pitting Ron Sims against that Rev. Hutcherson guy from team religion that they say convinced Microsoft to hate gays last year. If you want to be really anal about it you can go to the Stranger offices and get advance tickets, but Town Hall is a pretty big place so you should be ok if you show up to the door with your $5. Try to keep it above the belt.

Now, I know you didn't reference The Chocolate War because they are both African American men, correct?

dammit, thanks for bringing that up. that is completely correct - it didn't occur to me that it could be interpretted that way until after this was posted. the chocolate war is just a classic beatdown that popped into my head recently and is in no way meant to symbolize anything beyond that.

It's also not meant to encourage ron sims to punch hutcherson in the groin.

Trying to stir things up, eh, hershey? Or should I say, "Ray Nagin"?!!

No - no stirring. I actually had a lil' chuckle. Which I'm sure makes me a bad person...
