City Basketball Showdown Tonight, Sonics Make Trade

metro4433.gifBainbridge and #8-ranked O’Dea (the two-time defending state champs) play a winner-to-state, loser-out game tonight. The outcome will likely hinge on this: can O’Dea’s Jamelle McMillan (son of Nate) stop Bainbridge’s Steven Gray.

Gray, a 6-4 junior guard, is feeling it. He scored 46 points Tuesday in a loser-out game against Sealth, with his future college coach, Gonzaga’s Mark Few, in attendance. Seattlest saw Gray in action earlier this season. He’s a streaky shooter. But when he’s on, he can hit from anywhere.

Like his father, McMillan is a great on-ball defender—maybe the best in the city. It should be a great matchup between two all-Metro first-teamers. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 pm tonight at Bellevue Community College. The gym is near the North Entrance.

In other hoops news, the Sonics latched themselves to Earl Watson for the next four seasons, trading Reggie Evans and Vitaly Potapenko to get the former Sonic and recently barely-used Nugget point guard in a three-team deal. Watson has four years left on a five-year, $29 million contract. Seriously, what the hell, Wally Walker? SupersonicSoul is not impressed either.

This is the keen financial acumen that led the Sonics to need a taxpayer bailout. Maybe NBA commish David Stern can defend the move when he testifies at a State Senate hearing today.

The Sonics beat Atlanta last night for the second time in two weeks. An optimist would say they've broken a four game losing streak. A pessimist would say that the Sonics have lost their last eight games vs. teams that are not Atlanta.

The man Huskies play Stanford tonight at home. They are only one game behind league-leaders UCLA and California. The game's sold-out, so you can walk up to Hec Ed and get a scalped ticket, or watch it on FSN. Neat article in the P-I today about Brandon Roy, and how his NBA draft stock is rising.

The woman Huskies try to upset #15 Stanford for the second time this year. This game, though is in Palo Alto. The Dawgs want to hold onto their third-place position. The game's at 7:00, you can listen on 1150-AM or at gohuskies.com.
