--This “special to the Seattle Times” is a Japanese-speaker interviewing Ichiro. On his off-season meeting with Mike Hargrove: “Some of the things I had to say were quite harsh.”
--Shock among the local media as, upon arriving at Mariners camp, Carl Everett did not stab a bullpen catcher, set his dog on Mike Hargrove, and loudly proclaim that the Earth was created in 48 days by Peabo Bryson.
Instead, according to the Seattle Times, Everett is “well-spoken.” In other news, Willie Bloomquist can jump surprisingly high, Ichiro is terrible at math, and Edgar Martinez doesn’t have as many kids as you’d expect.
--The Mariners signed stat-head favorite Roberto Petagine to a minor league contract. At least Petagine used to be a stat-head favorite, based on his exceptional minor league performance. --The team intends to go through the farce of pretending that the second base position is up for grabs, when in fact only an injury or an oh-fer spring will prevent Jose Lopez from being given the starting job. His “competition”? 93-year-old Fernando Vina and U.S.S. Mariner bane Willie Bloomquist.
--MLB.com has a small piece on top prospect Adam Jones, who’s now a centerfielder because the M’s think Yuniesky Betancourt is the long-term solution at shortstop.
