Hoops Hooray

nai23322.jpgBasketball has been good to Seattlest recently. It provided the impetus for a weekend trip down I-5, where we watched the Dawgs obliterate Oregon State, surprised ourselves by spending only $50 at Powell’s, and had a fantastic dim-sum brunch.

In other news:

Brandon Roy’s 21 points against Oregon and near triple-double vs. the Beavers won him Pac-10 player of the week honors for the second week in a row. The last Husky to do that was Christian Welp. The Dawgs' two wins raised their RPI and Bracketology now has them as a #7 seed.

Nate Robinson won the NBA’s slam dunk competition, wowing the crowd by dunking over former slam dunk champ Spud Webb. Nate Robinson—state champion basketball player, starting Division I football player, All-Pac-10 basketball player, and NBA slam dunk winner. And he’s five-foot-six. Is he the best athlete ever to come out of Seattle? Who else?

The Husky women swept their final homestand of the year, against the Oregon schools, moving to third-place in the Pac-10 and practically assuring themselves of a berth in the NCAA tournament. On Thursday, sporadic performer Jill Bell had her most important performance as a Husky. On Saturday, the Huskies got 21 points from emergency starter Kristen O’Neill, as top scorer Cameo Hicks sat out with the flu.

Bob Hill’s still doesn't understand why the Spurs fired him in 1996. Apparently he’s the only person in the Western Hemisphere that hasn’t realized that the Spurs tanked that season on purpose so they could draft Tim Duncan.

The Seattle Times reports that one of Seattlest’s favorite prep players, guard Ryan Anderson of Rainier Beach, is a hell of a musician and a distant cousin of former NBA power forward and smooth jazz practitioner Wayman Tisdale.

Tonight, with high school district tournaments in full swing, there’s many games to see. Seattlest is headed to see the old alma mater, Garfield, face off against Woodinville. If you have the afternoon off, check out the aforementioned Ryan Anderson and Rainier Beach against O’Dea. Tip-off at 4:45 at Bellevue Community College.
