Unstealth Sealth

csealth33.gifIf you want to avoid the media's glare, you probably don't want to beat an opponent by 84 points. But the Chief Sealth girls' basketball team did just that. And the Seattle Times fixed them in their sights.

Today's paper screamed this damning front page headline: Coaches violated rules to build state's top team. And reporters Christine Willmsen and Michael Ko don't pull any punches in the lead, either:

The Chief Sealth High School girls basketball team is a juggernaut: Reigning state champions. Undefeated this year at 22-0, annihilating opponents by scores as lopsided as 87-3. Nationally ranked by USA Today and Sports Illustrated.

How does this otherwise-undistinguished West Seattle public school do it?

It breaks the rules.

Ouch.

According to the Times, their investigation reveals that Chief Sealth's coach, Ray Willis, arranged for fake leases on apartments to circumvent residency requirements. He recruited players as early as the sixth grade. Three sets of kids and parents reveal how Willis enticed them to join the program.

The school district is investigating the allegations, and penalties could include disqualifying Sealth from the district tournament, which has already started. Sealth is scheduled to play tomorrow night.

I'm pretty sure I saw this on Law and Order.

I go to Chief Sealth high school and I think it unfair of the media to assume and write untrue and unfair facts that are like I said "ASSUMED." I think people should focus on their business and not on other peoples business! thank you!
