The Touch, The Feel of Velouria
Velouria--the name evokes a land where everything is soft and touchable, or if you're more musically minded, it evokes images of Kim Deal and Frank Black. Velouria the boutique in Ballard rests comfortably between both evocations--everything in the store is soft and touchable, and its located right next door to Sonic Boom Records. Tes de Luna, the proprietor, has taken the time to give Seattlites a boutique unlike any other in the city. Each piece is selected with obvious care and attention to detail.
The shop features de Luna's own label, Zuzupop which utilizes vintage fabrics and classic design for an aesthetic that is one of a kind yet timeless. Zuzupop also has some pretty sweet silk-screened tees with an oh-so-now avian theme. The shop also carries Canada's House of Spy which is a bit more rock-n-roll, but retains a feminine quality with touches like ribbons and sequins. Portland's Elizabeth Dye is also represented in the store. Her simple tops are classy and understated.
In the handbags and accessories department, Velouria has more than a handful from which to choose. Our favorite accessory right now are the square pressed felt rings by Jean Lee of Feltro. Queen Bee handbags, a Pacific Northwest staple, is sold in the store alongside Seattlest fave Copacetic.
Of course, no boutique would be complete without greeting and gift cards to go along with your unique purchase. Tennis, Anyone? and Charm School both fill the bill nicely and round out the store's charm.
If you need a little more impetus to haul over to Ballard, then we suggest checking out one of Velouria's rockin' fashion shows. There have been four already held at neighbor Sonic Boom, and a fifth is planned for May at the Crocodile. Once you see the eclecticism offered, you'll make Velouria a must-stop shop on your trip to the Ballard Sunday Market.
