Highway Of Death

mini-westsumt2.jpgTwo aren't a coincidence in Seattlest's book. Two's a trend. Actually, we can sometimes be convinced that one is a trend, but for the time being let's leave it at two. Not three, but two men behaving erratically have suffered severe injuries at the hands of traffic on I-90 east of Seattle over the past few days. First there was the naked guy who got hit by a truck in the middle of the night along with a dog that may or may not have been his. Now we have news of a Local Man laying in the eastbound lane of I-90 after crashing into a pole with his truck. The unnamed man was critically injured when three vehicles hit him and is in unstable condition at Harborview. That's two and that's a trend.

Let's not continue it. Maybe it's something in the snow or the altitude or some substance washing up from the road bed there, but let's figure it out and not continue this trend. Seattlest is all for erratic behavior and nakedness in, say, the backyard or the garage or a fine dining establishment, but when they occur on the highway and result in someone in unstable condition at Harborview it's not fun for either the naked guy or the poor driver who already has to contend with mudslides, rocks, snow, yetis, etc.

From the Seattle Times:

The incident happened about 6:20 a.m. near the Preston interchange, about 21 miles east of Seattle. Several motorists called 911 to report a pickup truck being erratically driven along High Point Way, which parallels I-90 on the north side of the freeway west of Preston, said Trooper Kelly Spangler.

The truck driver crashed against a utility pole then got out, climbed over a guardrail, went down an embankment and crossed the freeway's westbound lanes, Spangler said. The man then crossed the median and lay down in an eastbound lane, where he was struck by three vehicles, she said.

I don't think there is any connection between the two occurences, though it would appear odd from some perspectives I'm sure... I happen to have been a good friend to the second victim, having seen him just shortly before this happened. I miss him like crazy, and this tragedy is nothing other than just that, a terrible and tragic accident. My condolences and thoughts are with his family, especially his beautiful daughter who hopefully will not be haunted by the events of that evening for the rest of her life, as well as the person who bears the weight of having been the last one to see him alive... it wasn't supposed to be like this.

To add to your trend conspiracy, Dan, both events happened in the early hours of the morning, didn't they?

  • I have grown to loath driving over Snoqualmie Pass and plan on taking White Pass the next time I have to drive to Richland to see the family.

I swear it is just plain cursed.
