Seahawks of 2005 Morph Into Seahawks of 1976-2004

They played like the Seahawks of old yesterday. The familiar demons of dropped passes, sub-par special teams play, injuries, terrible clock management, and the short end of the stick from the refs doomed the local 11 against a team they should have beat.

The myth of the Pittsburgh Steelers as a "smashmouth" "shove-it-down-your-throat" "old-school" football team can be put to rest. The Steelers' three touchdowns came on a naked bootleg by the quarterback (after "The Bus" couldn't get three yards in two downs), a 76-yard run in which their running back wasn't even touched (and our backup safety took a horrible tackling angle), and a touchdown pass thrown by a wide receiver.

This is not to say that the Steelers didn't deserve to win--they surely did. But they certainly didn't dominate the Seahawks with toughness and grit. They outfoxed them. He may look like a goon in a B-movie, but Pittsburgh head coach Bill Cowher's mustache hides a smirk of superiority this morning.

This Super Bowl did provide one indelible moment of pure joy--Kelly Herndon's third-quarter interception with the Steelers deep in Hawks territory, seemingly about to bump the score to 21-3. Herndon returned it 76 yards (a Super Bowl record) and set up the Seahawks' only touchdown. At Casa de Seattlest, we jockeyed for position in front of the TV during the return (which seemed to take forever) then made our own little celebrations after the play ended: Seattlest David ran upstairs to yell "I love America!" from the back porch, while Seattlest Seth rode a pilates ball on his stomach around the basement. Good memories. Share yours in the comments if you can bear it.

Your 2005 Seattle Seahawks: 15-4, with the NFL's MVP, and the franchise's first trip to the Super Bowl. You can welcome the team back and thank them for the great season today at 2pm at Qwest Field.

  • The crowd at Clever Dunnes was hungry for winning but ultimately resigned to our fate. At least there was that third quarter interception. Photos: http://flickr.com/photos/tomharpel/tags/superbowlxl
