Dog-sled Racing: Not Just for Alaska Anymore

And Seattlest thought we bought hordes of dog food each month. We average about 50-60 pounds per month with our two chow-hounds--try 40 pounds per week. That's how much Perry Solomon and his family feed their 12 Alaskan huskies now that they are deep in dog-sledding season. The Seattle Times has a feature story running on Solomon, how dog-sledding has become a full family affair for him, and the upcoming races this weekend outside Plain, WA located north of Leavenworth in Chelan county.

Solomon and family spend their summers running sea kayak tours in Alaska, and head back down here for the winter to train their dogs in the snow outside Leavenworth. They also offer public dog-sled rides through their Alaska Dreamin' Sled Dog company. We called to get pricing on public dog-sled tours, but as Perry's mother informed us, they're awfully busy what with the race coming up this weekend so we might not hear back from them for a few days. In the meantime, we'll see whether we could get our dogs to do anything other than look at us funny when we holler "Gee" and "Haw" at them.
