This Weekend in Sportsball
National Champs!: The UW women's volleyball team swept favored Nebraska three games to none in the NCAA Championship game. The Huskies didn't lose a game the entire tournament--becoming only the second team to achieve that feat.
First-round bye: The Seahawks survived a revitalized Steve McNair and came back to beat Tennessee 28-24, securing the franchise's first-ever first-round bye in the NFL playoffs. The Hawks can clinch home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with one win in the next two games (or a Chicago loss in either of thiers). The Hawks next play defeated Indianapolis Sunday at Qwest Field.
DawgMen remain undefeated: The Husky men's basketball team, behind 25 points from Brandon Roy, beat Eastern Washington soundly Friday night. The 9-0 Dawgs have another tune-up game Friday against 5-6 Patriot Conference also-rans Lehigh. You can buy tickets at gohuskies.com.
Better Beach: Top prep city team Rainier Beach bounced back from a surprising loss to unranked Cleveland and beat West Seattle by 27. They play in a tournament in riparian hippie town San Luis Obispo beginning today.
McMillan's Men Mauled:The Sonics served ex-coach Nate McMillan a big plate of sauteed who-needs-your-ass on Friday night, blowing Portland out. Rashard Lewis scored 37. The Sonics play Washington Wizards, who've lost 5 of 6, tonight at 7 at Key Arena. Buy tickets.
1991 Huskies on the Ballot: Ever complain that you don't like who you vote for? Today you won't. At ESPN, they are having fans vote on whether storied college football teams of the past could beat the 2005 USC Trojans. The first team that fans will pass judgement upon? The 1991 Huskies. Give those undefeated Dawgs (who held opponents to less than ten points per game!) their due. Vote early, vote often.
