The Seahawks finally made the cover of Sports Illustrated. Shaun Alexander, on the verge of breaking the all-time rushing touchdown record, is deemed worthy of the honor. The Dec. 19th edition's cover also has a small pic of Gonzaga star and Spokane native Adam Morrison. Northwest, represent!
The Mariners have had five players on an SI cover--Gaylord Perry, Ken Griffey, Jr. (four times), Jay Buhner, Randy Johnson, and Ichiro. Griffey's first SI cover was the highlight of the early 90s for Mariner baseball.
Doesn't seem like the SI cover means as much as it did then, probably because the magazine has gotten worse, and ESPN has gotten better, but, still, it shows how successful the Hawks' season has been.
Supersonics have appeared on two covers--Marvin Webster (and Jack Sikma's back) was the first.
The first Seattle sports figure to appear on the cover of SI? You'll never guess...Husky QB Bob Schloredt, on October 3, 1960. Husky QB Sonny Sixkiller also got a cover.
The Seattle Sounders soccer team? Still waiting for their first SI cover. Keep kicking, boys!

Sounders on SI cover? Now THAT'S an issued I'd buy. :)
You missed a Sonics SI cover! GP was featured prior to the 1996 finals matchup with the Bulls. The exact date was June 10, 1996, and you can link to the cover at http://dynamic.si.cnn.com/si_online/covers/issues/1996/0610.html. I remember this because my brother featured this SI cover prominently on his wall for years.
Two more: Mariner Brett Boone was on the July 16, 2001 cover, and Sonic Gus Williams was on the June 11, 1979 cover.
