It Took Only 29 Years, but....

1219_mid.jpgThe Seahawks finally made the cover of Sports Illustrated. Shaun Alexander, on the verge of breaking the all-time rushing touchdown record, is deemed worthy of the honor. The Dec. 19th edition's cover also has a small pic of Gonzaga star and Spokane native Adam Morrison. Northwest, represent!

The Mariners have had five players on an SI cover--Gaylord Perry, Ken Griffey, Jr. (four times), Jay Buhner, Randy Johnson, and Ichiro. Griffey's first SI cover was the highlight of the early 90s for Mariner baseball.

Doesn't seem like the SI cover means as much as it did then, probably because the magazine has gotten worse, and ESPN has gotten better, but, still, it shows how successful the Hawks' season has been.

Supersonics have appeared on two covers--Marvin Webster (and Jack Sikma's back) was the first.

The first Seattle sports figure to appear on the cover of SI? You'll never guess...Husky QB Bob Schloredt, on October 3, 1960. Husky QB Sonny Sixkiller also got a cover.

The Seattle Sounders soccer team? Still waiting for their first SI cover. Keep kicking, boys!
