All The News That's Fit To Post

-When you hear that an experimental plane has crashed you expect to hear that some kind of ninja plane from Boeing Field ditched into the ocean. This time it's a DIY job, though. We're guessing the flight itinerary didn't read "Garage, Chehalis Airport, trees, Harborview ICU," but that's unfortunately what happened.

-Our beef has Mad Cow, their beef has Mad Cow, let's just call the whole thing off.

-The end of Hotmail is approaching. Finally, although not without some pains. Early reviews seem positive for Windows Live Mail and the consensus is that it's almost as good as a desktop email program or Yahoo's new mail. And, uh, if that's where the bar is set then Microsoft should have few problems. Can Redmond create a decent web-based email app? Probable. But the real question is whether they can create the same buzz Gmail did with their invitations. Doubtful.

-Fischer Communications Inc. of Fischer Plaza fame (that sci-fi lookin' thing where they film Grey's Anatomy exteriors and that sports bar where nobody goes is) just bought KPOU and KPOU in La Grande and Salem, Oregon. Hooray for media consolidation.

  • Thomas, from a Native Northwesterner, welcome!

A few other things you should know about Seattle:

    1. You're going to be mostly disappointed at what passes for "Mexican Food" around here.

    2. Some of the native dialects will briefly confuse you until you develop and ear for them, but it mostly only happens in Ballard.

    3. Most people will be unfamiliar with the concept of "air conditioning".

    4. In public, many of the locals will appear to be about to/just getting back from taking a long hike. This is known as "Seattle Casual Style".

    5. "Everything Seattleites know about Texas, they learned from watching 'King Of The Hill'".

    6. "The mountain's out" is a common expression for "Hot enough for you?", even though it won't really be that hot.

    7. As you've probably heard, people in Seattle drink a lot of coffee. This does not, however, mean they do things quickly, especially if there's any possibility of forming a committee to develop a process to look into the feasibility of doing the thing in the first place; which there always will be.

    8. Nobody (with the possible exception of the purveyors of this fine blog) will publically admit to being a sports fan, unless a team actually reaches the playoffs, at which point they will claim to have known all along, "this was OUR season". Once said team gets blown out in the playoffs, they will immediately revert back to claiming not to care about sports.

    9. There is no "r" in "Washington".

    10. One easy way to spot a native is to ask them, "where is humptulips?" If they snort or giggle, they're not originally from around here.

  • Jake, you sure know how to make a Texan feel welcome. At least he's safe on the CA plates.

Thomas, to steal a line from our editor Dan, I'd start by reading this here site, back to front.

    Cliff Notes:

It does rain here, but it is the pattern of how it rains that makes us special. It doesn't so much rain in bursting fat drops, instead the sky pisses on us at semi-regular intervals. We get less rain each year than Dallas.

People here drive like they live in a small town in Iowa. And they often do so in never-to-see-offroads SUVs.

We have a lot of big-ass companies here that people love to hate. See the next point.

    Seattlites love to complain.

And lastly, it is so shockingly gorgeous here in the summer that we forget all the big soul-sucking corporate sinkholes, SUVs, pissing rain, and piss-ant whiners and stick around for yet another go-round. Welcome.

  • It really freaking rains a lot here and don't bring an obnoxious big ass SUV with California plates to Seattle it will piss off the locals.

  • What should someone who is about to move to Seattle in 15 days know about Seattle?
