World in Tizzy as Seattle Snores

soccer-04.gifHere in Seattle, it's a slow sports day. The only major local team in action is the Husky women's basketball team, who host Michigan tonight. It's high school basketball night, but there aren't any particularly compelling matchups.

It's such a slow day, in fact, that the P-I's Jim Moore decided to fill his column space speculating on who Seattle's Sexiest Athletes are. Included with the article--a staggeringly unflattering picture of the Seattle Storm's Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson.

But as we snooze, the vast majority of the world's sports fans are fit to bust, as the draw for the World Cup happens today at 11:30 PST. Worldwide, 320 million people are expected to watch as the 32 qualifying countries are put into eight groups of four teams. Heidi Klum is the emcee--her native Germany hosts the Cup.

If you care, you can watch it live on the Internet. The actual ball-kicking starts June 9.

UPDATE:The U.S. of A. is drawn into Group E, with Italy, Ghana, and the Czech Republic. The first game for the U.S. will be June 12, vs. the Czechs. Havel good day.

    Nederland, Argentina, Germany, Spain, Portugal...

How about we scrap the US men's team and send the Chicago White Sox instead.

I'll be happy if we can avoid Brazil, England, France, Italy,.. Damn, we're screwed.
