While I prefer my travel glove-free, that's good to know. A friend of mine has been shy of crossing the border ever since her passport expired. That link should help her overcome her fear of impromptu Canada adventures.

Actually, US and Canadian citizens are still not required to have a passport when crossing the border, though a passport (even an expired one) or a birth certificate is "highly recommended" as a supplement to your driver's license. That is code for "We'll let you through but we might have to put the gloves on first." Full details here.
My passport expired this year, and while I've sat on my hands not renewing it (finally did last week), I've cruised through the CA border with my license and birth certificate. The one time I didn't have my birth certificate, all I got was a bit of a raised eyebrow but they let me through nonetheless.

Isn't the current standard a passport or birth certificate to make a run for the (northern) border? I think that the days of driver license only have passed.
