Real Word Seattle Alum Actually Exists In Real Life
Once upon a 1998 the Real World was filmed in Seattle and the cast lived on one of the piers down by Myrtle Edwards. They were probably going for a houseboat feel but couldn't find or build anything large enough to contain the cast along with the cameras and equipment it takes to make the World Real. It probably worked in favor of the show because whenever you're trying to brainwash someone it's best to isolate them from anyone who's not a part of your message and no one lived down there in 1998. Ah, a reality TV producer's wet dream: Eight young adults living drunken and alone near an urban center..
The one thing Seattlest remembers from that Real World season, besides the job that one of the guys got with the fish throwers, is when that one girl had to leave the show for some reason. Real World, must you do everything first? Before Survivor even thought about snuffing someone's fire the Real World was sending cast members packing in gigantic flame outs. So someone was driving this woman away from the pier and another of the housemates came over to taunt her or something and she called him gay. How could a man more effectively defend his macho than with a shriek and an open-handed slap to the face through the car window? We probably don't remember that scene from the show so much as we remember it from the shows about the show. "Real World Lowlights Revisited vs Carson Daly IIV in Atalntic City" or something.
We revisit this slice of MTV life because BoingBoing pointed out today that the slapee from that episode (Irene McGee, actually) has a show on the San Francisco State University radio station KSFS called "No one's listening."
Welcome to irenemcgee.com, the official website and contact information for Irene McGee.McGee is the first person to walk off the set of a reality television show during filming.
Her opposition to the disturbing lack of ethics in media has driven her to speak publicly about her experiences.
Yeah, that kinda makes it seem like she walked off the show because of some big ethical confrontation with MTV, and that may very well have been the case, but wasn't it presented as a health issue when it went down? Anway, we haven't listened to her show yet, but apparently it's about media education and she's had guests like Lawrence Lessig and Chomsky on. Good for you, Irene.
