Know Your Past, Know Your Future
The Red Bull Music Academy continues to march its way through Seattle's clubs, and it continues to only improve in its offerings. It was thought that the main education would be by the few lucky attendees. As it turns out, the Academy is educating Seattle crowds as well, with lecturers' DJ sets providing lessons to their respective listeners. Monday Biz Markie taught us left coasters a little about classic hip hop (with only a few gripes), and last night Danny Krivit's disco-dominated set had even the injured on the dancefloor. The Academy education is truly for Seattle at large, not just those attending the lectures during the day. This weekend will continue in that vein, with prime opportunities to witness both the past and the future of electronic music.
Larry "Mr. Fingers" Heard is a house music legend. There are a lot of people given a lot of acclaim, and while that praise is well-deserved, only a few can truly warrant legendary status. His eighties productions marked the transition between disco and house, and his lengthy discography is filled with Chicago house classics (many on the previously mentioned Trax Records). If you've ever enjoyed house music at any point, you owe Larry Heard a word of thanks. This is a very special opportunity to see a musical master at work. DO NOT MISS THIS!
The Larry Heard set is a chance to pay respects and get a history lesson. Rather than focusing on the past however, Daz-I-Kue (of Bugz in the Attic) will focus on music's future with his take on broken beat. Where house and techno are disco's daughters, broken beat is more of a mixed breed. Pulling cues from electronic music (house, techno, drum and bass, etc.) and mixing that up with hip hop, R & B, soul, and world rhythms, the broken beat sound provides the ultimate in flexibility, giving producers the opportunity to create complex soundscapes that function equally well for both the upper (head-nodding) and lower (ass-shaking) halves. This hybrid is truly a result of our connected society's sea of influences, and represents one direction where music will be headed in years to come. Daz-I-Kue is well-suited to being your guide to the future, since his Bugz in the Attic crew has been blazing the trail away from our musical present.
