Dig That Jazz Like Snowflakes

waterbabies.jpgSeattle has been the home to many a great jazz artist like Ray Charles and Quincy Jones, but you don’t hear us getting excited about new local jazz that often. Especially ones who do improv. Improv can often sink an audience into a quicksand of repetition and leave it gasping for air. It’s just a letter away from "Improve" afterall, so one tends to be skeptical.

It’s rare to get it right but the Water Babies have the musical chemistry and chops that carry their free-form compositions to tingly heights. Plus, they know how to lay down a big fat groove and that’s a good thing. They’re having a CD-release party for their first album called Draw Me a Bath at ToST, 513 N. 36th St., in Fremont on Saturday, Nov. 19, starting at 9. It’s almost an absurdist idea but as an improv band, they will never play any of the songs on their CD.
