Shame on You

mini-deardiary.JPGEveryone who writes from time to time has a few pieces of work that should never see the light of day. Well, that's about to change. Tomorrow evening, Seattle will bear witness to the Salon of Shame, a take-off on NYC's Cringe reading nights, wherein people dig deep into their repertoires and voluntarily disclose embarrassing things they've written. Y'know, the sort of things where you might not be able to make eye contact with the individual after the fact. Awk-ward!

Anyway, the show tomorrow night is sponsored by local blog Electrolicious and personal narrative curators A Guide to Visitors, the latter of which is well-known around town for promoting public recitation of embarrassing stories. Seattlest's former roommate participated in an AGtV show where he recounted the time he came out and informed his parents that he was a selfish hedonist. His tale was full of nervous puking and a burgeoning love of butt sex (good times). Tomorrow night's event focuses on diaries, which definitely make for excellent, cringe-worthy fodder---

The idea is simple: we read embarrassing things in front of you. Inspired by the horrific things we used to furtively scribble in our diaries, Electrolicious.com invites you to join us November 9th at the Rendezvous' Jewelbox Theater as we excise the demons of truly embarrassing writing. A half dozen Seattle writers will stand before you and read their most shameful journal passages. Excruciating tales of heartbreak! Agonizing descriptions of early drug experiences! Teen perspectives on world politics! It's all here, served on a verbal platter for you to drink up and enjoy.

Want to get in on the action? Bring your own old diary to read! There will be an open mic of shame later in the evening.

Wednesday November 9, 7:30-9:30pm

Peter, at the pre-Salon of Shame private reading, I read the story of my first internet date, circa 1992. It turned out that one of the other readers was long-time friends with the boy I was on the date with. Seattle truly is incestuous!

Don't be suprised. Seattle is such a small city in that you can run into people you know from work and other activities in so many places that it's very likely that you'll encounter the target of your "poison pen" at a reading.
