You've Been Warned (About Warren)
Winter sports enthusiasts of Seattle, there's life beyond Warren Miller ski movies. We are so tired of how tired they are. Despite recent attempts on old Uncle Miller's part to incorporate "new" styles and footage into his films (news alert Warren: snowboarding has been around for multiple decades now), his annual fall films only amount to aggregious Nissan commercials interspersed with that same old story about how he started out in Sun Valley. If we hear "When I was camping in my van in the parking lot outside Sun Valley in 1950..." one more time, our brains will definitely be exiting our ears right quick.
Should you like to see what is going on this century in the world of single and double-planked snow adventures, Seattlest points your attention to the showing of "Tangerine Dream" this Thursday, November 3rd, at the Showbox. Tangerine Dream (because, dude, it is all about living the dream, man) is the 13th full-length production by Wyoming outfit Teton Gravity Research, and their films are both beautiful and full of jaw-dropping shenanigans. They are also much more likely to get you fired up for the season than sitting around some Theater with a bunch of people who still think that watching someone carve big turns in powder is exciting or seeing people fall off chair lifts is hysterically funny.
This cinematic upgrade does come with some vocabulary trade-offs, we'll confess. Seattlest plans to have a drink every time we hear someone say "dude" or "sick". Double shots all around for "Dude that was sick". Look for us on the floor as you make your way out of the Showbox.
And in a move that makes Seattlest jump up and down and clap our hands (we might even say "Yeah"), this event comes fully-stocked with an after-show by local hip-hop duo Blue Scholars. Goodness people, what a concept, a hip-hop performance at a skiing/boarding movie premiere! The audacity of such a perfect idea. There is also a drawing to win a free heli-skiing trip in Alaska. Lordy, if they serve Snow Cap at this gig as well, our brains just might come out our ears regardless. But this time out of bliss, not aggravated boredom.
Lastly, this is a movie premier tour, people. So if you miss the Seattle showing, you've got plenty of options, some of them also featuring Blue Scholars (Eugene and Portland, OR). Tickets available at the venue of your choice, or online via Ticketswest.
