Seattlest was suprised to find that the Seattle Pedestrian Advisory Board is seeking members from the unwashed masses. Their website indicates that six of the eleven slots will be filled by appointees from the mayor and the remaining five appointed by the City Council. One of those eleven slots is supposed to be a reserved for a young adult (19-29 yrs).
Ok, appointed membership, that makes sense. We figured a couple of Nichols's nieces and interns would get the nod along with a haundfull of whoever plays squash with the City Council on Tuesday nights. Isn't that where appointees come from? But either those people all have jobs already or "Pedestrian Advisory Board Member" just doesn't carry the cachet we think it does - The P-I printed the following today:
Board members must be city residents and cannot work for the city. For more information, visit www.seattle.gov/spab To apply, submit a resume and letter of interest by Dec. 12 to: Megan Hoyt, Seattle Department of Transportation Pedestrian Program, 700 Fifth Ave., Suite 3900, P.O. Box 34996, Seattle, WA 98124-4996.
Think of the glories that await you in the world pedestrian advocacy! Please, Seattlest readers, someone get themselves onto the Pedestrian Advisory Board. We're particularly talking to the young adults out there. This could be the beginnings of a long and fruitless political career. You start by arguing the positioning of utility poles to facilitate maximum pedestrian throughput. You finish in the U.S. Senate.

Hey man the Seattle Postering ban and the Teen Dance Ordanace was a big deal a couple years ago. believe it or not the inability to post flyers for musical acts oh phone polls in Seattle was a big politcal issue.
