Behind perhaps only Andrew Sullivan (or Michael Musto if you live life through VH1) Dan Savage is our country's most prominent gay. From time to time in Seattle we may think of him merely as "that dude from The Stranger" but the guy is syndicated in a hell of lot of papers around the country, writes a decent book, and generally makes a lot of sense when he appears on television to discuss serious subjects. He's a National Voice, and we have precious few of those. Because of that, it is your civic duty as a bookish Seattleite to not only purchase Dan Savage's new book "The Commitment: Love, Sex, Marriage, and My Family," but to attend his reading tomorrow night at Bailey/Coy Books.
We're sorry if you had plans, but you should have watched the calendar more closely before you made them and now you're going to have to cancel. You are NOT obligated to have Dan sign your copy of the book, though. Seattlest hates author-signed copies and their damn markup in the book shop and you are free to forge an inscription from the local author/editor/columnist/professional gay that will be humourous for the few moments it takes you to write it and once again when it's browsed at your Capital Hill rummage sale sometime in 2010. 2010 is, by the way, the year you can move this book off of your "I'm a conscientious Seattle citizen" display bookshelf. Hopefully by then there will be newer Dan Savage titles to go in it's place and the issue of gay marriage will be a quaint relic. As if it's not already.
Danny Savage's older brother Bill swirlied the book over at The Stranger last week:
The book is nowhere near as grim as my little screed here. As always, Danny is funny, a sound survival strategy for younger brothers everywhere. Some of the laugh-out-loud moments include descriptions of how death defines a successful marriage (a funeral home in Chicago gets lots of free publicity); the story of my nephew's one-eyed, deaf, and brain-damaged dog; how young straight people today live the "gay lifestyle" of the 1970s; the inexplicable tolerance of apparent child abuse in South Dakota; and why skull rings make perfect wedding bands.
