Republicans, they are a lot like us, except wealthier with a better knowledge of Big and Rich lyrics. They also have little say in the Seattle political spectrum-- except that there are enough GOPers in the city to tilt a close election, if they bother to pick which lilly liberal Dem they want to go with. The point is not much attention is paid to Republicans in Seattle . However, there are two races this fall in which the GOP may be able to influence the way us latte -sipping, kayak-paddling city slickers live.
Yesterday the Times featured an article highlighting the Republican forces behind Initiative 912, which would repeal the gas tax passed by the state legislature. The money from the tax is going towards road improvements all over the state, most notably the Alaskan Way Viaduct, which would receive over two billion dollars. A repeal of the tax would cause the Viaduct to be replaced by wishing.
The Times wasn't done yet, as this morning there was a different article by a different reporter on the efforts of Republicans to unseat King County Executive Ron Sims. Money is flowing like melting artic glaciers into the campaign to elect King County Councilmember David Irons. Although he is some $200,000 behind Sims' fund-raising total, the state Republican Party is looking to spend $300,000 on a get out the vote effort.
Some things you may want to consider while you're out hugging your next tree.

McGinn is Mayor

So why aren't the Republicans affecting their legislative agenda through the legislature rather than a paid signature gathered initiative that was funded by special interest money? Oh yeah it is because the voters of Washington forced them into a minority in the State House, State Senate and shut them out of the Governors Mansion. They have to do this because the voters of Washington State do not trust them to make laws and budgets in Olympia.
