Seattle Weekly's Finally Got Mail

mini-swlogo.gifWe've been waiting for a while now for The Seattle Weekly to take a few baby steps into the world of the internet. Rival weekly The Stranger came around not too long ago with forums, a blog and some RSS goodness that we think is really working out for them, so we've been a bit mystified by the continuing reluctance of The Weekly to do anything at all on the internet, However, today we discovered that they've actually made some progress.

As much as we love RSS (and The Weekly does got some), our favorite style of syndicated content is still the email newsletter and that's exactly what you can find at www.SeattleWeekly.com right today. We know it's old school, but nothing beats email in Seattlest's book. We signed ourselves up last night and today we recieved it and even though it's just an HTML rendering of their table of contents we'll admit right now that it goes a long long way towards getting Seattlest to read Seattle Weekly material. Unfortunately they haven't granted us the ability to link directly to the signup.

We have to apply an unfortunate thumbs down to their electronic print edition, though. It's a nice idea and their advertisters no doubt will be very interested to see how many of the print replicas are viewed online, but why not just make it a PDF? No one's going to download a browser plugin just to read The Seattle Weekly. We're geeky about stuff like that and even we won't do it.

I'm interested to see how the changes turn out.

But jeez, the thumbnail of Charles Cross' face, on the frontpage right now, makes him look diseased. Perhaps whoever does their image edits should remember when to use jpeg instead of gif.

    - Ha, and I've probably "discovered" it and written about it like 3 times by now. If that's the case it's high time to punch it up.

-Flash and RealNetworks plugins are pretty universal. Don't they come pre-bundled with most browsers? The point is there are many many sites that use flash and so, grudgingly I'll install the plugin manually if I have to. Off the top of my head I can't think of any other sites that use DjVu and I'm not going to get a plugin for one site.

-I'm emailing you about the Major Web changes.

  • - We've been doing this e-mail newsletter for like three years. You're just now discovering it?

    - Have you ever tried browsing a 100-page, graphics-laden PDF document? Have you ever downloaded a PDF that big? Have you tried the DjVu plug-in? Don't you have plug-ins for Flash or RealNetworks? It's not that complicated.

    - Major Web changes in the works.
