All in the (Musical) Family

Last month's Deep House Originals kickoff brought about an all-too-rare sight, that of a completely barren bar, and a full dancefloor, possibly the truest testament to how good the music actually was. For anyone that had to miss that show, Saturday brings the second installment in the series, with Glenn Underground bringing the deepest of the deep house sounds.

01_27_04_0446_56.jpgThere are a lot of house DJs that claim Chicago ties since it does lend a certain credibility, but there are few that have the pedigree to back it up. Glenn Underground has not only produced an amazingly lengthy discography, he has actually performed at the original Shelter and the Warehouse (the first house music venues), so to say he's been around a while is an understatement. Expect to hear an evening of jazzy, organic music, and to be part of a dancefloor working itself into a sweaty frenzy. A jazzy organic frenzy at that.

[Addendum: In addition to Glenn Underground, Gene Hunt will be playing a one hour set celebrating his latest CD release, which pays homage to house music godfathers Larry Heard and Robert Owens. So the bill has not one, but two heavy-hitters for the price of one. You have no excuse for not being here.]

If Saturday's show is your sophisticated martini-drinking grandfather, then Sunday's show is your trouble-making cousin drinking Pabst behind the garage. Those seemingly tireless Decibel organizers are at it again, bringing T. Raumschmiere's brand of punk-no (punk + techno) to Chop Suey.

traumschmiere_01.jpgThe Shitkatapult/Detroit Underground Showcase at last week's Decibel Festival pummeled the crowd into submission with hard techno beats. As a staple of the Shitkatapult roster, T. Raumschmiere should provide that same level of intensity, but will switch things up a bit with the addition of a live band. The resulting sound is more Nine Inch Nails than Atari Teenage Riot, which is a bit like comparing losing a finger to losing your whole hand (either way, it's an intense experience). The night will start with a set from Foscil, whose debut album keeps the trip-hop fires burning, and a set from Jerry Abstract, techno-DJ extraordinaire.
