Sculpture Racing Invades PT
You can usually get a good feel for an event by the media distributed to promote it. If you see a guy with a guitar on a flyer stapled to a tree you don't have to scrutinize the (no doubt questionably legible) text to have a pretty good idea whether the event is for you or not. You either rawk or you don't. Likewise if you drive past a Clear Channel monstrosity on the highway blaring an image of a scantily clad singer, you know it's going to be expensive and that there will be synchronized and choreographed dancing. That's either not your bag or it is, and Seattlest isn't going to judge you on that. (lame) Even event websites are distinctive. Some are flashy and arty and take a little effort to navigate and some are polished and clean and funnel you right to the ticket purchasing page. Either way their designs say a lot about the event they're promoting. In that light, check out www.kineticrace.info.
It's pretty clear from the website that the Kinetic Sculpture Race in Port Townsend next weekend will be slightly confused, slightly disorganized and a lot of fun. It also seems safe to say there won't be a corporate sponsor. We know it's Seattlest style to alert you to events with little or no lead time and we've been known to do event listings for things actually already in the past, but we want to give you plenty of time to cancel that hike you had planned for the 1st and 2nd of October and book yourselves in PT next weekend. We hear you'll be happy if you bring a bike along with you.
Later, in 1983, the Greater Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Sculpture Race was held, making the Port Townsend the second oldest race on the ever growing Kinetic Racing circuit. The Port Townsend race still holds to the original values and spirit of the first race held in Ferndale. Relying on grass roots support, the Port Townsend race is one of the few remaining kinetic races that are not owned by a corporation. It is an independent race, with the volunteer organizers priding themselves on keeping the grass roots "kinetic spirit" alive.
