Give A Little Bit

wristband.jpgSeems like everybody and their mama has been raising money for the Red Cross or other agencies helping in hurricane relief efforts. Even Seattlest's local karaoke dive bar was taking cash for the cause last Sunday night. What follows is by no means a comprehensive list, but just a smattering of upcoming events by local businesses where your money can make a difference:

· Restaurants: If you dine at any Chow Foods eatery (5 Spot, Atlas Foods, The Hi-Life, Coastal Kitchen, or Endolyne Joe's) this Sunday night from 5-10pm, half of your bill will go towards Mercy Corps. The latest issue of The Stranger has an article on similar efforts by the likes of Sazerac, Attic Alehouse, and Ruth's Chris. Mmm...steak.

· Bars: Two notable and relatively new spaces in Fremont, Nectar and High Dive, are donating some of their profits to the Red Cross. In the case of Nectar, it's an ambigiously worded "percentage" of all proceeds this week and the next, while the High Dive is setting aside a dollar of each paid cover for hurricane relief. Meanwhile, next Tuesday the 13th, the Zig Zag Café is having a night of jazz starting at 8:30pm (suggested minimum donation to the Red Cross $10), and the Baltic Room will be hosting a Red Cross fundraising party Saturday, September 17th. Details TBA.

· Moviehouses: Last night, at both their Redmond and Seattle locations, The Big Picture had fundraising screenings of the undeniably appropriate film The Big Easy. Central Cinema had their benefit last night too, where they raised the tidy sum of $1101. This weekend our good friends at the Northwest Film Forum are showing early B&W Jarmusch with Down By Law, featuring the unlikely comedy team of Tom Waits, John Lurie, and Roberto Benigni. All proceeds from these screenings (Fri-Sun at 7 and 9:15pm) will go towards the Red Cross. They're asking for a $10 minimum, with further donations taken at the screenings as well. Get yer tickets here.

· Music: Though the tix only went on sale this morning at 10am, the Death Cab for Cutie/Harvey Danger hurricane relief show September 21st at the Showbox is already sold out. That makes three, count them, three upcoming Death Cab shows with zero tickets remaining---for that, you can blame The O.C. If you're desperate to get into that show or their October Paramount gigs, we suggest you try Craigslist or your local scalper.
