Voto Temprano, Voto a Menudo
When fans elected Major League Baseball's All-(20th) Century Team in 1999, they weren't very politically correct about it. Nowhere among the fifty available spots did they vote in a Latino player. Bad fans!
Now, MLB is making up for it with a special election of sorts--fan balloting for the Latino Legends Team.
Between today and October 10th, fans can choose who were the top people at each position whose parents happened to be of Hispanic descent.
We like this trend and hope it is extended to other ethnicities and coincidences of birth. How about the All-Green-Eyed Team, or the Pigeon-Toed Pitchers of the Decade? And yet we digress.
Mariner legend Edgar Martinez is one of five candidates for Latino Legend at third base. Other ex-Mariners on the ballot include A-Rod (as a shortstop) and, in the relief pitcher category, Armando Benitez and Jose Mesa.
Former Mariner Julio Cruz, in a dreadful oversight, is not on the ballot at second base (Juan Samuel???!!!???), but you can write him in.
Voting begins today and ends October 10th. The team will be announced before Game 4 of this year's World Series.
