Cinerama Set Free!
Praise Jesus! Or the Force, either one. The long bout of Montezuma's Revenge (aka the current, and blessedly last, Star Wars film) which has plagued the theater is finally over! Sure, it broke records, but cash isn't the only measure of success. Lucas & Co. have long passed their sell-by dates, hardly able to achieve story rudiments like cause and effect in their visually top-heavy cartoons. And let's not talk about the acting. The crushing weight of special-effects has usurped all common sense at Skywalker Ranch, which bodes ill for the future, as the Man is currently up to something. Fingers crossed that Earth collides with a comet before it sees the light of day, whatever it is.
So what can we look forward to at Cinerama? Hmmm... looks like another big bag of eye-candy with dubious acting. The eye-candy is courtesy of ex-Python, Terry Gilliam, and the scent of ham comes from the presence of Matt Damon. Lots of people still love Gilliam (he did give us The Fisher King, after all- and he has the most rotten luck), but Damon's one worthwhile performance (in The Talented Mr. Ripley) does not excuse his other mawkish attempts to ingratiate. The Brothers Grimm is one of the last films left to Disney by the Weinsteins before their impending split from Miramax- a batch which as already included some stinkers. Actual judgment is withheld until the film can be seen, but Seattlest reserves the right to spit and curse (along with a ton of Disney execs) afterward.
