The Search for the Best...Slice (Pt 2 )
Seattlest is depressed. We're beginning to think that finding great pizza in Seattle is akin to finding a great bottle of wine at QFC. It's probable, but such discoveries are to be few and far between.
We promise to give as many pizzeria's a chance as we can stand, but so far we haven't hit any place which we would go back to especially for their pie. There is hope in that we haven't hit the big boys yet, but until we do, we're going to be glum about this whole project.
As you can surmise, the two pizza joints in today's competition completely underwhelmed us. And if you've ever been whelmed, you understand how dramatic being underwhelmed can be.
We decided to put Seattle's Best Pizza under the microscope in order to see if they indeed are Seattle's best. We'll save you the time...they aren't. Their competitor? Sorella's - A Greek pizzeria in Madison Park that we picked completely at random.
Crust: Let's get this over quick, shall we? Seattle's Best crust was sad...just sad. Doughy, tasteless, and stale from sitting out in the Pizza warmer far beyond it's alloted time. Any nuance the crust might have had was lost.
Sorella's crust was floury, almost overly so, but baked long enough to have a nutty undertone. A good, but not great, crust.
Seattle's Best Pizza - 3 | Sorella's - 6.5
Sauce: The sauce at Seattle's Best was sweet, but there was too little of it. What was there was thin, dry and uninteresting.
Sorella's had a decent sauce, very spicy and a good tomato tartness. It was very distinct and dominated the pizza.
Seattle's Best Pizza - 4 | Sorella's - 7
Pepperoni:We at Seattlest have seen more abuses done to pepperoni than we care to share. Seattle's Best Pizza's pepperoni was gritty, and only slightly spicy. It was also dried out thanks to the Pizza warmer.
Sorella's pepperoni was mealy (bad), oily (a good characteristic if not overly oily) and slightly more spicy than Seattle's Best. AN average pepperoni.
Seattle's Best Pizza - 4 | Sorella's - 5
Cheese: Seattle's Best Pizza's cheese was your standard pizza cheese that you see at the majority of pizza houses across our fair city. Flavorful with a decent amount of sweetness, but again, dried out.
The cheese is where Sorella's completely fell apart. Their cheese was sweet, but only slightly so. The cheese was overbaked, leaving it not gooey nor melty, simply a solid cake of baked cheese. Blech.
Seattle's Best Pizza - 5 | Sorella's - 3.5
Misc.Seattle's Best Pizza may sell slices, but lord knows why. They don't make it a nice place to have a walk-in meal at all. You have to get your own slices from the pizza warmer, then you have to choose from a total of four seats distributed at 3 tables and a side counter. They then have a garbage can placed directly next to one of their tables. Someone doesn't like walk-in customers it seems.
Sorella's is a sit down pizzeria, and they don't sell slices, so you'll pay more for your slice. Their pie is a cross between New York Style and a deep dish, making the pie at least unique. Very friendly staff.
Seattle's Best Pizza - 1 | Sorella's - 6.5
The result? Well, Seattle's Best Pizza clearly isn't, losing to an average pizza at Sorella's 3.4 to 5.7. We'll leave it up to you if you want to go to Sorella's or not, but we highly recommend avoiding Seattle's Best Pizza for a sit down slice.
