Able Was I Ere I Saw Elma

We've already told you about the Danskin Triathlon on August 21, a fine entry-level women-only triathlon. We also told you that you missed your chance to sign up for this year's race, as registration closed on March 7.
Fear not. You can still do your first triathlon this summer, and we might even suggest it could be more fun. You see, at Danskin, yes, you're surrounded by happy, helpful, cheery fellow athletes...but you're surrounded by thousands of them. Fun, supportive, crowded, long lines for the port-a-potty, and a bit scary on the swim.
Meet Elma. Where is Elma? We're still not quite sure, and we've raced there twice. It's a small town on the way to Aberdeen, and they have a curious tradition of running small, folksy triathlons that we think are just perfect for beginners. The course is flat, and the lack of crowds means you won't get knocked around on the swim.
The other delight? Elma has a race practically every weekend. You could go on Saturday, August 20, Sunday, August 28, Monday, September 5, Sunday, September 25, or Sunday, October 2.
Now, when we say folksy, we mean folksy. Bring your own swim cap. Be ready to eat cold cuts afterwards. And do stay for the kids' triathlon, where they let the little sprites wade if they want.
