More Like Six Feet Deader

Do not read any of this post if you don't want to know what's happening on Six Feet Under. We don't wanna hear any complaining, you big babies. p.s. Dumbledore dies.

nate.jpgWe've never watched Six Feet Under religiously. That is to say, we've seen enough to be familiar with the characters and we do think it's a good show and all...but we only caught episodes here and there, missing some seasons near-completely. We were totally out of the loop during the whole Lisa imbroglio. However, with this season being the last (and with TiVo making it so damn easy), we figured we should watch to see what ends up happening to the Fisher clan and friends.

Season 5 started out slowly enough, primarily dealing with the issue of mental illness (i.e., both Billy and George were krazy), as well as the stresses borne of being a caregiver (i.e., both Claire and Ruth had to deal with said krazy). At this point, Billy may be back on his meds and outta town, and Ruth may have finally gotten rid of George, but there's still a lot of care-giving going 'round: David and Keith have adopted two foster kids with issues, while Rico and Vanessa are attempting to reconcile their marriage and take care of each other. Nothing too exciting.

But then, in the midst of all this---whaaaa?---Nate goes and cheats on pregnant Brenda with his kinda-still step-sister Maggie. And then he has a friggin' brain aneurysm, goes into a coma, and DIES. Excuse us if we're still a little reeling from all that. Of course, we don't exactly mind seeing a static character like Nate go to the great beyond, nor do we have a problem with the lesson being taught: If you cheat on your fetus-filled wife with a simpering Quaker, God will smite you but good. Fellas, recognize.

Still, with only a few episodes left, we can't help but wonder where the show's gonna go from here. Previews for next week showed everybody preparing for the funeral, naturally. Expect some disputes about the service, especially given Nate's late touchy-feely views on death. Obviously, we're hoping for Nate to make a posthumous appearance. There's a good chance he will, since corpses on Six Feet Under tend to do such things. Plus, it would gives a nice symmetry to the show, which began with the postmortem musings of Nate and David's father, the deceased Fisher patriarch. We'll learn how things turn out for the Fishers soon enough; till then, we'll be waiting with bated breath. In the meantime, one word: "Narm!"

Six Feet Under is on HBO a lot. Check out new episodes Sundays at 6pm PDT.
