Seattlest enjoyed a rare night of theatre this weekend. We saw Patience, a lovely show put on by Seattle’s Gilbert and Sullivan society. Now, if you’ve never seen a Gilbert and Sullivan show before, we suggest thinking of their oeuvre as a cross between Oscar Wilde and Cole Porter, with an occasional dash of pirates (see Pirates of Penzance) and some satire thrown in for good measure.
Patience didn’t disappoint: this production is very well put-together. There are funny moments written into the script, and there are funny moments that came about, Seattlest is sure, in the process of developing the show. We do so love that about the theatre. Quite a few of these actors have been performing with the Gilbert and Sullivan society for years, and their tenure shows.
Only a few moments in the show made Seattlest cringe. One was a particular reference to "SODO MOJO", which we are fairly certain was not in the original script. Anything that takes us out of the world the play is set in and jars the audience into a Seattle reference is, in our opinion, just not appropriate.
The singing in the show is also quite good all the way around. We’re quite glad that good old G&S decided to repeat verses so much, because generally by the third time around we’ve finally caught all the words. Unfortunately, in the patter songs the words fly by so fast you’re lucky if you can catch the end rhyme (perhaps the most famous patter song comes from Pirates of Penzance and begins, "I am the very model of a modern Major-General, I’ve information vegetable, animal and mineral…").
Lucky for all of you who are dying to get out of the heat after our requisite 2 days of 80-degree weather, Patience is playing this coming weekend and the weekend after at the Rep (or, rather, the Bagley Wright Theatre). Y’all can get information about buying tickets here. And bring a sweater – that theatre is air conditioned as if we lived in a city that gets more than 2 days of summer.
