Accidental Overnight Stay at Discovery Park

Hikers getting lost in the woods is an unfortunately frequent occurence here in the Pacific Northwest. Cell phones and hand-held GPS certainly help a lot of people out of jams, but Seattlest suspects that the increasing numbers of local hikers mean that there are more folks lost in the woods now than ever.

One would think it would be difficult to get trapped in Discovery Park, though. Apparently, a man who was attempting to get a better look at Monday's fireworks fell off a trail and had to spend the night in the park after failing to climb either up (too steep) or down (blackberries).

From the P-I:

A female jogger heard the man's cries for help yesterday morning and alerted a park employee, who called firefighters, Seattle Fire Department spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick said.

The 36-year-old man told rescuers that he was walking along a trail that ends in a steep embankment about 9:30 p.m. Monday, looking for a better view, when he fell about 50 feet to a ledge.

Next time you're jogging the loop trail remember your whistle, flares, overnight kit, and blackberry bag.
