Subterranean Latte Blues
Fresh off the Alanis Morissette-Starbucks deal, Bob Dylan further caters to his adult contemporary demographic with a new exclusive distribution deal with our favorite mega-corporation that has the words 'Star' and 'bucks' in the title . Under this deal a never before released Dylan CD containing ten live recordings from 1962 (back when he was good) will be sold exclusively at the coffee chain.
While this isn't a huge deal, the exclusive deals that Starbucks is fond of are bad signs for the indie music stores that lack corporate muscle. Artists like Morissette and Dylan are the type of artists with loyal fan bases who used to go into music stores where they would potentially buy other CDs. Combine file -sharing, iTunes, and Starbucks exclusives and things aren't looking so hot for indie music retailer. We guess that they should remember what our president said last night and 'Stay the Course.'
