While soccer, hockey and a handful of other second-tier sports have been fighting to get themselves into your living room for over a decade, a few activities have managed to make the jump recently. Witness NASCAR, golf, and poker. Poker! It's on the TV nonstop and while some of us are looking forward to the day it gets its own cable channel (thereby getting the hell off ESPN2) others of us are apparently pretty into it. Regardless, it's World Series of Poker time.
"The Mighty" Quinn Do out of Seattle has been making a run at the tourney and won Event #17 on June 20th and is first overall.
Quinn lists Seattle as his hometown and nearly earned a criminology degree from UW before he rolled the dice in the restaurant world with jobs in Seattle and Las Vegas, finally opening "What the Pho" in Seattle. He started playing poker online and at Muckleshoot and under the careful guidance of more experienced players became the player he is today. An inspiration to us all.
From the PI:
So far, his rookie earnings at the tournament clock in at more than $300,000.He plans to donate some of the money to charity, but most of it will go toward building up his bankroll for higher buy-in tournaments and to invest in his restaurant enterprises.
"Usually at higher stakes, you play with a lot of better players," Do said. "You can only learn from better players."
He hopes his luck sticks around for the main event, a $10,000 No Limit Texas Hold 'em beginning July 7 that is expected to have at least 4,000 players.
"I won't give up until after the World Series," he said.
