How Do We Love Our Food? Let Us Count the Ways (Pt. 2)

18725036_2e35d125bf_m.jpgWe know, we know...you've been patiently waiting for this unscientific list of why Seattle's food scene is better than nearly any other city's food scene. Petitions have been drawn, bets have been placed. So let's not wait any longer, shall we?

Well, let's wait a little longer. Seattlest should mention items that could have been put on the list, but didn't quite make the cut. Things like Salumi, or Tom Douglas, or Fresh Seafood nearly every day of the year--these all could have been mentioned. FareStart should also be recognized for providing homeless individuals job training in the restaurant indsutry. But alas, we here at Seattlest decided that the list should only be ten items long, and not, say, thirty-four. Hence, some very worthwhile food items were left off the list.

Now, to get yourselves in the countdown mood, review items 10-6 by clicking here.

Ready? Let us continue...

5. Nationally Recognized Restaurants: For a 23rd largest city in American, we sure have more than our fair share of restaurants recognized by the food illuminati. Lark, Union, and Lampreia have all garnered national press. Aforementioned Tom Douglas, he of five, count 'em, five restaurants, has broken bread with Martha Stewart. Both Douglas and Tamara Murphy (of Brasa) are to be featured on Iron Chef America. There's no doubt about it, we got some folks here who know how to cook!

4. The International District: This is Seattle's secret treasure, and it shouldn't be a secret at all. Seattlest goes to the ID because we know that this is the best place to get authentic Asian cuisine. Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, and various Chinese regions are all represented very well. Places we like? Two-dollar Bahn Mi's at Seattle Deli, dinners at Seven Stars Peppers, or Maekawa. Dim sum at China Gate. Oh, there is so much more. Part of the delight of the ID is that there is always someplace new to try.

3. Wine: We Seattleites are blessed. Temperate climate? Check. Mineral-rich volcanic soil? Check. This means this area is a prime place to grow wine grapes. We could tell you which winery is our favorite *cough-Chateau Ste. Michelle-cough*, but the best way to start your search for your favorite Washington wine is to head to The Tasting Room. For a small fee, they'll let you taste wines from six wineries.

2. Coffee: It would be gauche for me to say Starbucks, and move on from there. Coffee is so much more than this corporate behemoth. Recent statistics show that there are 2.5 coffeehouses in this city for every 10,000 residents. That translates into roughly 141 coffee houses in the area. This does not include those coffee shacks that pepper our landscape. If you're looking for non-corporate coffee houses that Seattlest digs, check out the three V's: Victrola, Vita, and Vivace.

And our number one food fav in Seattle?

1. Pike Place Market: Take all of the items from 10-2 in the list. You will find some aspect of them at the Pike Place Market. Is it crowded? Yes. Do the tourists sometimes annoy us? Hell yes. But where else in this city can you get a Hum Bow, an egg creme soda, fresh fish, and then finish the day with a nice cassoulet, all within steps of one another? Nowhere. The fact that you can also buy fresh meat and produce (not to mention comic books and magic tricks) is only icing on a very huge cake. Considering all of that, we'll gladly allow the throngs of tourists to get in our way. Just as long as we can get our cheap vegetables, homemade cheeses and cheap bottles of wine.

How dare you not mention the good Pacific Northwest Beer? Not to mention the late Frugal Gourmet.

23rd largest CITY, yes, but Seattle is the 13th largest metropolitan area in the country.
