There Is an A in Rivalry
There isn’t a team Seattlest enjoys watching the Mariners beat more than the Oakland A's. Geographically, the A's are the Mariners' closest rival. Historically, one or both of the teams have been contenders. 2005 is an exception. Let's just say time hasn't been kind to these franchises.
Even though this match-up is no longer a modern day Clash of the Titans, there are still many reasons to hate the A’s.
Their fans should be reason enough to dislike this franchise. When these East Bay residents are not posting bail they are endlessly moaning about the state of social justice or the treatment of third world citizens. Try sitting next to that for three hours.
Their GM had a best selling book written about his genius, which it turns out could have been a pamphlet titled ‘Draft Really Good Pitchers.’ Their players, lead by the most overrated player of this or any century: Eric Byrnes, are annoying meatheads who have all decided to use Color Me Badd’s hairdresser.
While we have greatly enjoyed watching their team utterly collapse in the playoffs time after time, after time, after time (9 times in all), this series makes us yearn for better days when a series like this would have meant more than a battle for third place.
Last night the A’s got the better of the Mariners after the offense failed to hit and Jeff Nelson gave up a three run home run in the eighth. The game’s lone highlight was an amazing diving catch by centerfielder Jeremy Reed.
The watered down rivalry continues tonight at Safeco Field. Buy Tickets.
