Westlake Plaza Kids Walk

Space Needle, Artwalk Plaques, Westlake Plaza, Seattle, WAHow often do you walk through the Westlake Park plaza? Ever look down on your way through?

Seattlest wanders through the plaza pretty often, but while the stone obelisks, arch, and waterfall are all pretty obvious, we'd only taken slight notice of the bronze plaques scattered embedded in the tiles. This last weekend on our way to hop a bus out to the U-District's street fair, we took a few minutes to take a closer look at the treasures found under our feet.

Installed as part of the redevelopment of Westlake Park (a project first proposed in 1968 and not completed until 20 years later), the plaques were “designed and produced by children of all ages for the enjoyment and entertainment of other children.” Count Seattlest as a child at heart, then, as we spent a pleasant few minutes wandering back and forth through the plaza in our attempt to track down every one of the 42 tiles (well, 42 if we found them all).

From deadly sculptures to sea monsters to Seattle history and trivia, the charming artwork and silly games were a pleasant reminder that there's far more to be seen around town than just the usual eye-catching architecture and space-age towers...you just need to know where to look!
